Who is PKU squeezie for?
PKU squeezie is for babies with PKU from 6 months of age and is suitable for many of the childhood years. Your dietitian will advise on when PKU squeezie is no longer suitable and when it is best for your child to change to another protein substitute.
Why does my dietitian want my child to try PKU squeezie?
At around 6 months of age, it is important for babies to start introducing solid food, often called weaning. As well as helping them get all of the nutrition they need to grow, weaning helps babies progress their oral skills which support chewing and language development. PKU squeezie is a second stage protein substitute that can be introduced alongside your baby’s phenylalanine-free infant formula at around 6 months of age. As it contains all of the nutrients (without phenylalanine) that your baby needs now, and over the next few years, and it is a texture suitable for use when weaning, it is ideal for trying at this stage.
How much PKU squeezie does my child need?
The amount of PKU squeezie your baby or child needs will depend on a variety of factors including their age, weight and PKU control. Initially, they may only need a very small amount which will likely increase as they grow. Your dietitian will advise exactly how much PKU squeezie your child will need each day.
How do I use PKU squeezie?
PKU squeezie is easy to use….
- Squeeze the pouch with the cap still on to mix the contents
- Take off the cap and squeeze directly on to a spoon
- Consume from the spoon
As children get a bit older they may prefer to take PKU squeezie straight from the pouch instead of from a spoon. This makes it really easy to use; particularly when out and about.
Remember water or another permitted drink should be taken straight after taking PKU squeezie.
What flavour is PKU squeezie?
PKU squeezie is available in an apple and banana flavour. The flavourings used are all natural so that it is suitable to use from 6 months of age.
