PKU express® is a concentrated, powdered protein substitute which, when mixed with water can be made into a paste or low volume drink, therefore making it easy to take the amount of formula needed.

What sizes does PKU express come in?
PKU express is available in two sachet sizes:
- PKU express15 contains the equivalent of 15 grams of protein
- PKU express20 contains the equivalent of 20 grams of protein
PKU express also contains the vitamins, minerals and trace elements that are needed to help meet your or your child’s daily nutritional requirements.
Who is PKU express for?
PKU express is for children and adults with PKU. It is suitable from 3 years of age and so can be taken through early childhood into adulthood, including pregnancy. Your dietitian will advise when is best for you or your child to start PKU express.
How much PKU express do I need?
The amount of PKU express needed will depend on a variety of factors including age, weight and PKU control. As we grow our nutritional requirements change, and so it is important that protein substitutes for those people with PKU, be tailored to meet these requirements.
PKU express can help in meeting you or your child’s protein, vitamin, mineral and trace element requirements. Your dietitian will advise on which size sachet to choose, and how many PKU express sachets will be needed each day.
How do I make PKU express?
PKU express can be prepared in a number of ways; each of them is easy! We’ve provided instructions on two ways below; you may come up with other ways to prepare your PKU express.
PKU express as a paste….makes a few spoonfuls
- Empty the contents of the sachet into a beaker
- Add 10ml of water if using PKU express15 or 20ml of water if using PKU express20
- Secure the lid on the beaker and shake well for 10 seconds
- Consume with a spoon.*
PKU express as a low volume drink…
- Empty the contents of the sachet into a beaker
- Add 80ml of water if using PKU express15 and 100ml of water if using PKU express20
- Secure the lid on the beaker and shake well for 10 seconds
- Consume as a drink*.
* As PKU Express is concentrated and does not contain much water, drinking water (or another permitted drink) straight after taking PKU express is recommended.
What flavour is PKU express available in?
PKU express15 is available in unflavoured and PKU express20 is avialable in unflavoured, lemon, orange and tropical. It can also be flavoured using one of Vitaflo’s FlavourPac sachets which are available in blackcurrant, orange, raspberry and tropical flavours. Some people also use permitted flavourings; ask your dietitian if unsure.
