Living with Phenylketonuria (PKU) has never been a barrier for me, rather it has been a catalyst for growth and resilience. From the very beginning, my parents instilled in me the belief that PKU was not a limitation, but rather a unique aspect of my life that I could embrace.
Early Beginnings
My journey with PKU began at birth, and with a strict diet and a supportive family, I learned to navigate life with determination. High school was a testament to this, as I graduated and secured a place at my first-choice university to study and complete a Bachelor of Commerce.
Overcoming Academic Challenges
University life brought its own set of challenges, particularly with abstract concepts in economics and accounting. However, it opened doors to a great social life and it was through learning subjects that I didn’t gel with that I discovered my true passion for creativity and writing. This was a turning point, leading me to graduate with a few distinctions, thanks to the unwavering support of my parents.
Professional Growth
Entering the professional world, I embarked on a graduate internship program that shaped my understanding of the corporate landscape and laid the foundation for a career in communications and marketing. This experience was valuable in providing me with the skills and confidence to navigate the complexities of the working world.
Pursuing Creative Aspirations
My desire to delve deeper into my creative side led me to later pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts. It was during this time that I was honoured to be selected for a national exhibition, showcasing the work of the country's top graduating students. Balancing my PKU diet with the demands of my studies was challenging, but with the support of my family and friends, I emerged more resilient and insightful than ever.
The journey to finding one's career path can be challenging for anyone, but living with PKU can add a layer of vulnerability. However, I believe it also brings with it positive spin-offs that have propelled me forward, allowing me to leverage my perspective on life with compassion.
Having a rare condition like PKU has given me a window into overall human experience. This viewpoint has been helpful when I’ve prepared for communication interviews with influential figures, from leading university researchers to founders of top Australian startups.
Overall, my journey with PKU is one I hope can inspire others to embrace it with determination, to recognise and honour the support systems around them, and cultivate a positive outlook.
